2017 WW: Building in Cybalounge: Roadmap 3: Labels and signs

Building in Cybalounge: Roadmap 3:
Labels and signs
Instructions are provided on how to create labels and signs in Cybalounge.  Previous articles have shown how to create objects and put textures (images) on them.

  • Cybalounge is a developing environment for building web-worlds.
  • A web-world is a three dimensional virtual world you visit on your browser.
  • Cybalounge provides tools for equipping a web-world with customized content.
  • With these tools, you can build without learning Javascript, HTML5, and WebGL.
  • Visit a web-worldCybalounge  Enter as guest, no registration, no password.
  • I will probably be there any weekday at 10-10:30 am California time.
  • My workshop: click push-pin (bottom), scroll for Selby's test world, click enter.

Prep: get ready for building

  • Enter building mode: click the ground, then click the crossed tools (bottom line).
  • If you are labeling an object, click on the object, selecting it.
  • Leave that object selected (making the next object its child object)
  • Click primitives and click the object you want to create.

Create text object

  • Click add text (this creates the text object as child of brick wall.).
  • Note that text object is now selected
  • Text object may be hard to see against light background.
  • Text object may take time to rez
  • Click attributes (of the new text object).
 Text entered

Enter text

  • Click dimensions (confusing, will probably be changed).
  • To enter your text, click Undefined (in green)
  • Type your text
  • If you can't see your text, you will fix that later.
Text positioned

Position the text object

  • Position the text object where you want it.
  • The position of a child object is relative to the parent object.
  • A position of all zeros would put the object at the center of the parent.
  • That might hide the child completely.
  • I chose -3 on the x axis to put the text in front of the  wall.
  • The units are centimeters.
 Text object adjusted

 Adjust text

  • Use Scale, Rotation, Material/color as needed.
  • I find the blue sliders make changes too large to be useful.
  • The scale units are in centimeters.
  • Scale seems to duplicate the function of Dimensions.
  • If you want to change the scale, keep the dimensions in the same ratio.
  • Rotation units are in degrees and can be negative, as here.

Is there a limit on the number of objects?

  • The important limit is load time.  A long load time loses readers.
  • You can buy more load time by providing something to read during the load.
  • Maybe essential instructions.

                1. I still haven't been able to register an account at https://nonprofitvirtualworld.org/. Is anyone else having problems? I can log in as a guest, but a guest can't import or make stuff.
